Media independence is a disputed concept that has different meanings in different contexts, and as an ideal norm, independence can be discussed at different levels. Therefore, media independence in current debates is related to media policy, which is clearly of great importance as long as media independence serves as a positive vision or "utopia" for journalists, activists, policy makers or media organizations. Because the more independent the media is, the more we will witness a responsive government with the strong support of the media, which can easily and without concern for the sake of any ruler and politician, make them accept their mistakes. Now, in this article, we have tried to examine the variable applications of the concept of independence in the current media policy discourse, including the conflicts between public services and commercial media, as well as other settings in which this concept is invoked, and finally, we argue How does the relational nature of independence make its use as a normative principle in media policy problematic? Thus, the purpose of this article is to examine the applications and changing contexts of media independence and to examine its value in media policy. The results of this research, using the descriptive-analytical method and collecting library documents, indicate that different aspects of media independence in a contemporary media environment are necessary to achieve an open government and play an important role in making officials accountable and transparent in their actions.
