English

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the position of Popper's philosophy of science in the quality of science news published by the media. In other words, it investigates the extent to which the criteria of Popper's principle of falsifiability are observed in content labeled as scientific by news agencies.
Method: To test the hypotheses, content analysis was applied to scientific-labeled materials published in the selected media outlets. For this purpose, scientific articles and news items were collected from reputable Iranian news agencies (IRIB, Asr-e Iran, ISNA, IRNA, and Mehr) over a three-month period during the summer of 2025 (1404 AH).
Results: The data revealed that among the examined news agencies, the criterion of "theoretical transparency" was observed at an average of 98.6%, "the possibility of falsifiability of the theory" at an average of 97.8%, and "empirical analysis of the theory" at an average of 98%. The criteria of "criticizability" and "lack of bias" were observed at averages of 55.4% and 57.2%, respectively. However, the criterion of "uncertainty" was observed at an average of only 18.6%. Consequently, all hypotheses except Hypothesis 5 were rejected, although Hypotheses 4 and 6 were confirmed with relatively small differences.
Conclusions: The criteria of theoretical transparency, falsifiability, and empirical analysis were accorded considerable priority by news agencies and their journalists, whereas the criterion of uncertainty received extremely low attention. Media outlets and/or journalists do not appear to attach importance to this criterion in published science news, which is noteworthy. Neglecting uncertainty in science can negatively affect the principle of falsifiability itself. These two principles constitute core elements of Popper's theory, and observing them can lend credibility to media content labeled as scientific. In addition, the criteria of criticizability and lack of bias, with averages between 50% and 60%, were only moderately observed by news agencies - a level that may be considered fragile. One notable result of this study is that, overall, in terms of observing Popper's falsifiability criteria in science news, the news agencies rank as follows: ISNA, IRIB, IRNA, Mehr, and Asr-e Iran.
