Subroto is a full professor of Music at the FLAME University's School of Fine & Performing Arts post-doc at the Center for Advanced Studies in Sanskrit at the university of Pune where he completed his research on 'Diminishing Cultures of South Asia' as a fellow of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation for his  project 'Anomalies in Saama Veda Kouthuma Shakha singing' from 2011-2012. From the same department he has researched and then presented a on-hour lec-dem on  the Stobhaksharas of Sama Gana at the Music Academy Madras on invitation, in Dec 2012 and which will be considered for publication in the academy's scholarly journal in April 2013. He has also recently been invited to be the Guest Editor of the Journal of Creative Communication (JOCC) being published by Sage under the aegis of MICA, Ahmedabad.
Subroto has learnt Indian art music from the age of eight in the Khayal genre. From 2002 to 2010 he  he learnt Dagarvani Dhrupad under Sayeeduddin Dagar in Pune, India. From February 2011 he started learning the Sama Veda (Singing) from a learned master of two Vedas and astrology, V Ramachandran (Pune) whose father (Meeruth Shastry) learnt it at the Kanchi Kamakoti Math of Shankaracharya. By an unknown design, Subroto also belongs to the same Kauthuma branch of Sama Veda tradition as his teacher.
Before passing away on June 11, 2011 (the extremely auspicious Nirjalaa Ekaadashi), his teacher , he said "Subroto you have mastered the svaras of Saama Veda. I am happy that I could teach this to someone". Subroto was his only disciple. He had coffee with his teacher at the latter's residence on 09.06.2011 for the first and the last time. He is since learning from the late teacher's youngest brother.
Subroto's PhD dissertation in music argues how creativity in general and music in particular needs 'avartan' (roughly cyclicity). His first post-doctoral work was with the aid from the ministry of information and broadcasting, government of India and has been uploaded here. He has a special interest in the semeiosis of Indian art music.
His international conference at the University of Leeds, UK was on Raga Qualia which approaches raga through psychology and then connects it with raga education. This was part of 'Empirical Musicology Conference' organised by The Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research  (SEMPRE), University of London. He was awarded the SEMPRE Conference Award for presenting his paper. He is currently extending this work. He writes regularly in a column called The Speaking Tree in The Times of India on music and its natural relationship with spirituality and several other human pursuits.
He learnt Khayal, first under Late Pundit Neelkantha Misra (Bhubaneshwar, Orissa) of Gwalior Gharana (Paluskar tradition). He then took a break for formal education. After his BSc (Physics) from the University of Bombay, he learnt under Late Dinkarrao Jadhav of the Agra and Jaipur Gharana. He then shifted base from Mumbai to Pune in 1991 and started learning under Late Pundit Bhaskar Ganesh Joshi of Gwalior Gharana (Vaze tradition) who was the last disciple of the legendary Late Pundit Ramkrishnabua Vaze (student of Ust Nissar Hussein Khan) of Gwalior. He is currently taking guidance from well known artiste Neela Bhagwat of Gwalior (Nissar Hussein Khan tradition) gharana.
Subroto has performed and delivered lecture demonstrations in several public and private forums. He teaches music from his home in Pune and visits various private and public universities as a lecturer of music, music journalism, film music, etc. He has also taught at the Film and Television Institute of India as a guest faculty.
