Objective: This study focuses on the Iran International News Network to analyze its narrative of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Method: This study analyzed the coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war on this news network using narrative analysis. The research sample consists of four statistical weeks and 28 news days spanning from 2021 to 2023, which were purposefully selected and constitute a news package.
Results: The Iran International News Network portrays the strategic partnership between Iran and Russia as a response to Western sanctions, highlighting economic and geopolitical benefits. The network systematically identifies and examines reports related to the war, including foreign policy developments, human-interest stories, and military engagements. The reports are characterized by a focus on human interests, attribution of responsibility, events of conflict, and emphasis on the war's impact on civilian populations. Additionally, news coverage emphasizes the roles of international actors and organizations involved in the conflict, presenting a narrative of strategic cooperation and resilience in the face of external pressures.
Conclusions: Through a framing of diplomacy and foreign policy, Iran International offers a narrative that integrates national interests with a dynamic and unique perspective on the war. Using selective framing, it depicts Iran as an independent actor advocating peace, diplomacy, and sovereignty, while also highlighting its economic and strategic interests with Russia.
